How to submit

  • Submission template (mandatory): A standard template is available. The template will help you structure your solutions and approaches. Download the Submission Template here
  • Optional Content: You can try to stand out and also supplement your submission with prototypes, image and video materials, or other concepts or visual elements.

Mandatory Questions

These three questions should definitely be addressed as part of your concept:

  • Solution Focus & Innovation: What specific technology, material, or process are you proposing to solve the key challenges in sealing Na-Ion pouch cells? How does your approach differ from existing solutions?
  • Performance & Durability: How does your solution ensure leak-proof durability over a 15+ year lifespan while withstanding high current applications and extreme temperature fluctuations (ranging from -30°C to +60°C)?
  • Scalability & Implementation: How can your solution be efficiently scaled for high-volume production at Clarios? How should testing be implemented? How can quality control and tolerance in production minimize the need for additional testing?

Inspiring Guiding Questions

Sealing Technologies

  • What sealing techniques (e.g., heat sealing, ultrasonic, adhesives) offer the best performance in ensuring long-term leak-proof durability, especially in the tab areas
  • How critical is the minimum welding area, and what innovations can improve this area to prevent leaks and ensure durability?
  • How can your solution balance speed (3-4 second cycle time) and sealing integrity to enhance production scalability without sacrificing performance?
  • What welding technologies, such as blow-off control, can ensure optimal weld quality and durability?
  • What environmental conditions (inert gas, temperature, humidity) are required for optimal sealing and welding results?

Material Innovations

  • Since Aluminum is the required material for the tabs, what innovations can you propose to improve the performance of Aluminum tabs
  • What materials or techniques can improve the performance and durability of the pouch layers while maintaining compatibility with Na-Ion chemistry?
  • How can new materials for the sealing strips or pouch layers reduce costs while enhancing flexibility and ensuring long-term durability?
  • How can material innovations improve the overall sealing performance, especially considering the fixed use of Aluminum in the tabs?

Testing & Quality Control

  • What test methods (e.g., pressure or vacuum-based leak tests) do you recommend to check for leakage or durability during production?
  • Could process parameters (such as weld characteristics) be optimized to directly identify conforming vs. non-conforming parts, thus eliminating the need for additional leakage testing?
  • What combination of process parameters and 100% testing could ensure cost-effective and efficient leak detection?
