The Challenge

Biodiversity credits are innovative mechanisms designed to turn environmental benefits into tradable commodities. By assigning a monetary value to the preservation and enhancement of biodiversity, these credits create financial incentives for organizations to invest in positive environmental outcomes. The ability to buy and sell these credits in a market allows companies to improve their environmental performance by supporting projects that deliver additional environmental benefits beyond what would occur under standard practices.

A flurry of voluntary biodiversity credit standards have emerged in the last year e.g. from companies including Cercarbono, Verra, Terrasos, and Plan Vivo. However, there is a lack of consistency across these standards. This is creating complexity and uncertainty for buyers & sellers that could limit market establishment and growth

Your Task

We invite you to explore how RWE can shape voluntary biodiversity credit standards and prepare for potential market participation: How can voluntary biodiversity credit standards be shaped to best meet the Global Goal for Nature, kick start market growth, and benefit RWE´s onshore renewables business?

  • Analyze: compare the range of biodiversity credit standards to identify consistencies and differences between them.
  • Strategize: identify and propose strategies for RWE to prepare for voluntary biodiversity credit markets and shape the development of standardization, particularly for the onshore renewable energy business (wind, solar PV and battery storage technologies).

In the "Knowledge Base" tab, you will find further information about RWE and its biodiversity resources and projects.

Focus Areas

Here are the Focus Areas that your analysis and strategy needs to address:

Creating credits
  • What are the most effective methodologies and approaches for generating biodiversity credits based on RWE’s onshore renewables (wind, solar PV, battery storage)?
  • How can biodiversity be created on RWE’s sites and made available as marketable credits?
  • How can RWE contribute to the promotion of standardized biodiversity credit methodologies, ensuring consistency and scalability in the market?
Business Stream
  • How can these biodiversity credits be accurately valued and effectively traded in the market, following existing standards?
  • What business strategies can RWE adopt to enter the biodiversity credit market and shape the standardization of these credits?
Exploring Additional Benefits
  • Beyond biodiversity credits, what additional opportunities (e.g., community projects, nutrient credits, socio-economic benefits) can RWE explore to maximize the impact of its biodiversity initiatives?

Guiding Questions

For your inspiration and solution development you will find further guiding questions for each focus areas below:

Creating credits
  • What is the definition of a biodiversity credit and could credits be supplied through RWE sites?
  • How would areas of biodiversity on site be allocated to individual credit units?
  • When are credits generated – for example, when new vegetation is planned, planted or fully grown?
  • Which methods can you think of for measuring biodiversity in terms of credits?
  • How would credits on site be managed and to what extent would that be different to how existing maintenance activities?
Business Stream
  • How are biodiversity credits priced and exchanged?
  • How can supply and demand be unlocked and catalyzed?
  • What is the method for monitoring, reporting and valuation?  What digital frameworks are available for this?
  • Where should RWE invest to have the greatest opportunity?
  • What can be learned from statutory biodiversity markets in England that could accelerate voluntary markets?
Exploring Additional Benefits
  • Are there other opportunities, e.g., community benefits or nutrient credits?
