Solvation Science Student Challenge (S3C)

Together with RESOLV, explore how solvent molecules influence the selectivity of a reaction!

Take part in RESOLV’s mission to overcome the traditional view of solvent molecules as passive spectators and to consider them as active reactants instead. Use literature research, your knowledge and your creativity to derive a new model that is able to reliably predict the selectivity of a reaction and also takes the influence of the solvent into account.

How do I participate?

Register

To participate in Challenges, you need to register on our platform first.

Participant Criteria

There are no requirements concerning age or educational background. This challenge is open for any ambitious mind determined to make an impact and provide an innovative approach to the topic - no matter if student, PhD student, postdoc, etc. The language of this Challenge is English.

Remember your participation is not binding until you submit the form, and the qualification phase ends. You can always withdraw your submission until then. After the deadline, we will count you in. If you should not be able to take part after all, just contact us, we will find a solution.

Participation options

Participate alone
You may participate without a team by clicking the button ‘Join now’ and then choosing the option ‘Participate Alone’ in the following Pop Up. Should you change your mind during the Challenge and decide to team up with others, you can do so as well. You can find out about other options down below.

Participate as a Team
You already have people you want to participate with? Great! One of you has to klick the button ’Join now’ and choose ‘Found your own team’. If you already have all the members you need, ignore the last question “What's the need of your team?” in the Pop Up. If you are open to let new members in, fill it in so others can send you a request to join your team. Now all of your team members can request to join the team you created in the Tab ‘Teams’. Remember, they must be registered on the platform to join the team. Every team member is equal, there is no leading position.

Join existing Team
You would like to participate as a part of a team, but don’t have anyone to team up with? Not a problem! Under the Tab Teams you will find an overview of all the teams who are searching for members. Request to join if your skills match what they are looking for. Good luck! You can apply for as many teams as you like until you have found the right team to join.

Not sure yet or no matching team available? Team-Matching-Channel!

You are unsure whether you want to take part and want to see what’s out there first? Not a problem! We can connect you with other participants seeking to find a team. You don’t need to be registered to request a matching opportunity. Just click the Team-Matching-Channel button next to the ‘join now’ button or join here and you´ll get access to our Matching-Channel on Slack. After matching, register and follow the instructions.

How mature does my idea or approach have to be?

For the submission it is sufficient to enter your idea or solution in the guiding questions of our submission template and upload it to our platform. The concept does not have to be fully developed with concrete implementation schemes. A visualization of your idea sketch based on one of our tracks is sufficient.

What if I want to work on more than one of the tracks?

The tracks are not completely distinct from each other. Always think about possible combinations of the tracks to find even more interesting and innovative approaches!

Why should I participate? What’s in for me?

The winning teams should not go home without a prize! Therefore, a total of € 3,600 will be distributed. This amount will be divided among the three best teams or participants as follows:

  • 1st place: €2,000
  • 2nd place: €1,000
  • 3rd place: €600

In addition, there are further exciting opportunities at the end of the Challenge!

For students, researchers and teams there might be, depending on the quality of the submission, exciting job and partnership opportunities to further develop the project together with RESOLV (internship, thesis, PhD etc.).

The winners and other promising teams will also receive access and an invitation to RESOLV's exclusive Summer School Solvation Science in summer 2022.

Depending on the quality of the submission, each participant will also receive a personalized certificate, which he/she can use for his/her CV.

Legal Terms and Conditions of the Challenge

Every participant will be able to use his or her own submissions to the full extent. All winners agree to enter into discussions with RESOLV within three months of the projects´ completion regarding possible further collaboration or further use of the submissions. During this period, the winners agree not to enter into discussions with third parties regarding further use of the solutions. All details can be found in the conditions of participation.
