Sound-absorbing Ceiling goes Aesthetic
Traditional acoustic ceilings often rely on costly and labor-intensive methods, sacrificing aesthetics for functionality. This compromise can lead to visible seams and joints that detract from achieving a uniform and flawless appearance, especially under varying lighting conditions.
In response, the architectural and interior design industry has recognized the growing demand for soundproofing solutions that seamlessly integrate with the overall visual appeal of a room.
As a leader in the acoustic ceiling market, Knauf understands the importance of addressing these challenges. Their current solution incorporates various different layers: (1) Metal construction (2) Hangers (3) Base & Support profiles (4) Mineral wool (sound absorption) (5) Perforated Panel (6) Top Layer (felt)
The perforated panel effectively conceals the mineral wool while maintaining sound wave permeability. However, the current top layer, made of rectangular cut felt attached with Velcro presents limitations such as visible joints and the inability to be painted.

That’s why Knauf wants to join forces with you to take sound-absorbing ceilings to the next level!
Key question
- How can we develop an exceptional sound-absorbing ceiling system that seamlessly integrates into any space, eliminates visible seams and joints, and offers aesthetic appeal?
Note: Existing as well as future materials can be taken into consideration.
Solution Guidance
During the challenge, you can either take the Knauf system as a basis for your solution and focus on (1) innovative solutions for the top layer OR develop (2) your own system combining known and new materials.
To approach this challenge systematically, there are three guiding steps incl. key questions in the attached document that may help you develop your solution. Additional and own ideas are also always welcome.
