Sustainable Construction in Rural Regions

Climate action requires broad implementation of new various concepts, which contribute to sustainability according to the various criteria. Sustainable and green construction, for instance, is one of the most relevant areas in which sustainable concepts need to be introduced and applied.

However, in rural areas this trend is not very advanced, because the whole focus often lies on urban development. Therefore, RWZ concentrates on rural development and within the framework of this challenge aims to find solutions on how to implement green and sustainable concepts for construction and energy supply in rural areas.

Sustainable Construction in Rural Regions

The ever-increasing requirements and criteria for sustainable action, as well as the urgent need to optimize the existing (infra)structures in a sustainable way, open broad scope for the development and implementation of new, greener and ecologically friendlier concepts. Especially in the construction sector, such concepts are particularly interesting in view of climate change.

Moreover, we are currently experiencing a multitude of uncertainties, be it in terms of supply insecurity or price stability. In order to counteract these challenges, the resources must be used efficiently, and the available space must be used wisely. In the context of this challenge, rural regions are of special interest, as modern trends tend to reach these areas rather slowly but are just as important as the development of urban areas.

RWZ as a driver of rural development has a variety of different instruments that can help different regional actors to make rural areas more sustainable and greener.

Information on the Challenge

The challenge is, on the one hand, to bundle the resources and offers of the RWZ in order to promote comprehensive services for sustainable construction in rural areas and, on the other hand, to identify suitable fields of action in which optimization potentials can be exploited.

The solutions can be developed for both private and public facilities and buildings.

Hint: If you already have ideas or concepts on how to make urban areas more sustainable you can think about how this solution can be transferred to the development of rural areas.

Key Questions:

  • How can RWZ and its related business units support ecological (green and sustainable) building in rural areas?
  • What innovative solutions can be provided for rural communities?
  • How can urban concepts be applied to rural communities?

You can choose one of the following tracks for your idea:
