How do I participate?

Register
To participate in challenges, you need to quickly register on our platform first.

Participation options

Participate alone
You take part individually by clicking the button ‘Join now’ and then clicking the option ‘Participate alone’ in the following Pop Up. If you change your mind in the course of the challenge and decide to team up, that’s not a problem. You can find out about your remaining options down below.

Join existing Team
You know you want to participate as a team up but don’t have anyone in mind to participate with? Not a problem! Under the Tab Teams you will find an overview of all the teams who are searching for members. Request to join if your skills match what they are looking for and good luck! You can apply for more than one team until you find the right one.

Participate as a Team
You already have people you want to participate with? Great! One of you has to klick the button ’Join now’ and choose ‘Found your own team’. If you have already all the members you need, ignore the last question ‘What's the need of your team?’ in the Pop Up. If you are open to let new members in, fill it out so your team is open for requests.
The rest of the team has to register first themselves on the platform and then request to join the team you founded in the Tab ‘Teams’. It doesn’t matter which team member founds the team, every team member is equal and there is no leading position.

Not sure yet? Team Matching!
You are not sure if you want to participate and want to see what's out there first? No problem!
We have provided you with a team-matching channel on Slack! Slack is a messaging platform which allows you easily to connect and communicate with other interested innovators and create teams. Just use the team-matching Channel button on top of every challenge.

Are there specific participation criteria?

There are no age or degree requirements. This challenge is open for every ambitious mind determined to make an impact with an innovative approach to the topic, no matter if student, researcher, Startup, etc. Excluded from participation are SAP employees or their relatives as well as government officials.

The language of this challenge is English.

Remember: Your participation is not binding until you submit the form, and the qualification phase ends. You can always withdraw your submission until then. Once you have turned in your submission, your participation is binding! Please take into account the timeline and be aware that you should be able to participate in every further step.

How mature must the approach be?

For the submission, it is sufficient to enter your idea or solution approach in the guiding questions of our submission template and upload it on our platform. It doesn't have to be a fully developed concept with concrete implementation. A visualization of your approach (maybe even sketch-based) is sufficient – it should be as well developed as possible but appropriate to the time you have.

Intellectual Property (IP): What happens with the rights to my solution?

If teams and/or participants do not belong to the winners of the challenge, all pre-existing intellectual property rights in results which are brought into the challenge (Foreground IP), as well as all intellectual property rights newly developed in the results in the challenge (Background IP) remain with the participants at all time.

During the interview phase, an obligatory coordination meeting between the qualified participants and SAP will take place. In that coordination meeting, SAP and the teams and/or participants will conclude an agreement, determining what is to be understood as Foreground IP.

If not otherwise agreed in that agreement, all Foreground IP remains completely with the participants and/or teams. Should any Background IP be developed in the challenge, it will be transferred or granted to SAP against payment of the prize money if no other agreement is made.

A different agreement can be reached on the handling of Foreground IP and Background IP if needed and intended from one party.

Note: If the parties (SAP and participants) cannot agree on the handling of Foreground IP and Background IP, SAP is entitled to appoint a successor and to exclude the team concerned.

All binding information can be found in the Conditions of Participation.

What happens after the first deadline?

After the end of the deadline, the submissions will be reviewed by SAP. Six participants or teams will be selected and invited to participate in the Interview phase. All participants will be informed about their participation until May 1, 11:59 p.m. CEST. After completion of the interview phase, a total of 5 participants or teams will qualify for the final phase of the challenge – see Tab Timeline.

What incentives and prizes are available and why should I apply?

We reward the most convincing submissions with a total of EUR 7,000. This will be divided between the top three teams or participants as follows:

  •     1st place:  EUR 4,000
  •     2nd place: EUR 2,000
  •     3rd place:  EUR 1,000

Furthermore, there will be more great opportunities at the end of the challenge! Based on your approach and your status, there are different possible further cooperation models:

  • Great internship opportunities for students and researchers
  • Collaboration models to further exploit your project together at SAP - employment, thesis cooperation, etc. Possibility of (research) collaborations and long-term partnerships
  • You will build your own reputation as a thought leader through your participation in the challenge and create an extensive network with relevant stakeholders from business
  • Personalized certificate for each participant that may be relevant to your CV

What technical equipment do I need for the virtual events and what tools are used for this?

You only need a laptop or computer with a stable internet connection. We will give you access to all relevant digital tools.
