The Program

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) represent a cutting-edge technology poised to revolutionize future wireless communication systems, including the forthcoming 6th generation (6G) networks. By using advanced metamaterials, RIS can manipulate electromagnetic waves to enhance signal propagation, improve coverage, and reduce energy consumption. Despite its promising potential, RIS is still in the early prototyping stage, with numerous stakeholders actively exploring its various applications. This nascent stage of development presents a unique opportunity for innovators to shape the future landscape of wireless communications by uncovering new and impactful use cases for RIS.

In order to take part you can choose one of two tracks:

  • Novel applications for RIS
  • Testing frameworks for RIS

Novel applications

The core challenge of this track is to evaluate and identify novel application potentials for RIS through comprehensive literature research and a thorough review of the current state of the art. Participants are tasked with diving deep into existing studies, experimental results, and theoretical discussions to uncover innovative uses and improvements for RIS technology. The objective is to foster innovations in RIS applications that provide tangible benefits and drive the adoption of this technology in new markets. This evaluation should consider technical feasibility, practical implications, potential market impact, and scalability of these new applications. By synthesizing this information, participants will contribute valuable insights that can guide future research and development efforts in RIS technology, ultimately accelerating its integration into diverse and impactful use cases.

  1. What does the current research landscape in RIS look like? Your literature review should consider and evaluate the following aspects: What are the benefits/drawbacks of RIS compared to alternative solutions (e.g. relays, repeater, additional base stations, etc.)? What are the state-of-the-art test and measurement solutions for characterizing RIS?
  2. What could be novel applications for RIS?
  3. How can R&S more specifically benefit of the RIS technology?

Testing frameworks

As RIS become integral to future network topologies, the development of dedicated conformance and regulatory requirements is essential. Rohde & Schwarz is actively supporting the creation of advanced testing approaches in standardization bodies such as 3GPP and ETSI. This task focuses on developing a reliable and efficient test environment to ensure the quick and accurate evaluation of RIS technologies, thereby facilitating their faster implementation and adoption. Participants are encouraged to explore innovative testing frameworks that address the specific needs and challenges of RIS performance assessment.

  1. What are the most important key performance indicators (KPIs) for evaluating RIS technologies?
  2. What components and equipment are necessary to implement a comprehensive test environment for RIS? Please visualize your test system via e.g. a block diagram.
  3. What detailed procedures are required to effectively conduct RIS performance tests? Describe the test procedure and visualize it in an e.g. test flow diagram.
  4. What techniques or algorithms could be applied to improve e.g. measurement accuracy and eliminate noise?
