Engineering Knowledge Copilot for Bertrandt

Bertrandt is seeking an AI-powered Engineering Knowledge Copilot that captures scattered and tacit engineering know-how and makes it instantly accessible in daily work. The goal is to preserve expert knowledge, accelerate onboarding of young engineers and support engineers during design and project tasks, validated in a Venture Client PoC.

Context

Bertrandt is an engineering services company in vehicle development, aerospace, and industry. Its engineers work across CAD/design construction and project engineering, often inside customer systems and processes, in Germany and at international sites - including many young engineers hired directly from university.

Critical engineering know-how is hard to keep current and hard to access in daily work. Today it sits in a mix of sources:

  • The heads of experienced employees (tacit, undocumented know-how)
  • Scattered Office files (PowerPoint, Word, PDF, Excel)
  • Customer system and process descriptions, including milestone checklists

Earlier attempts to collect it in shared files and a wiki were effortful to maintain and quickly outdated, and easy access to answers in daily work was missing.

Engineering design knowledge at Bertrandt is layered: (1) general design guidelines depending on material and manufacturing process, (2) customer-specific design guidelines, and (3) general legal and homologation (type-approval) requirements. The general layers are largely customer-independent and partly available as PowerPoint/PDF documents; customer-specific content is confidential and not part of the PoC.

Problem Definition

The core issues are:

  • Knowledge loss: deep expert know-how is often undocumented and disappears when employees leave.
  • Hard to access in the flow of work: no easy, low-effort way to get answers while designing in CAD or running a project.
  • Onboarding gap: new and young engineers need on-demand access to expertise beyond initial training.
  • Effortful capture: tacit know-how in people's heads must be collectable with minimal effort (ideally by voice), without pulling engineers out of productive work for lengthy interviews
