AI-Based Early Detection of Oversized Cabin Baggage in the Passenger Flow

Baden-Airpark, operator of Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport, is looking for a privacy-compliant camera-based or sensor-based solution that detects likely oversized or excess cabin baggage early in the passenger flow and matches it with the passenger's booked fare, so that checks can move away from the boarding gate.

About

The company

Baden-Airpark GmbH operates Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport (FKB) in Rheinmünster, Baden-Württemberg. In 2025 the airport handled around 2.3 million passengers. Its route network focuses on leisure and city destinations served mainly by low-cost and leisure airlines.

The airport is currently modernising its terminal, including new security screening technology and a redesigned passenger flow with a central service counter behind security.

Innovation & Digitalisation

Digitalisation is a new strategic focus for Baden-Airpark, driven by its management. Through the Innovationsbeschleuniger Baden-Württemberg, the airport is working with external technology partners on concrete operational use cases for the first time.

The focus lies on pragmatic applications that:

  • Improve the passenger experience and reduce conflict situations
  • Relieve operational staff
  • Strengthen the partnership with the airlines
  • Can be scaled step by step across the terminal

All solutions must comply with GDPR and the aviation security rules that apply at the airport.
