Transformative climate actions

Both the green and the digital transformation are taking place simultaneously and are closely intertwined. They are even mutually interdependent and can reinforce each other.

However, this also means that fundamental rethinking and retooling is required.
Supporting economic and societal digital transformation should not be treated separately from achieving a sustainability model.

The goal must be to understand digital innovation as an enabler for sustainable development and, at the same time, to manage the potential climate risks of digitalization, such as the fast-growing greenhouse gas emissions of the digital economy.

Developing digital solutions that help all actors in society, from industry and business to the public sector, cities and citizens, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move toward a carbon-neutral economy and society is crucial to achieving the climate goals of the Paris Agreement. And that's where this Challenge comes in.

Challenge

The European Commission and the UNFCCC are challenging you to come up with innovative digital solutions that enable cities and citizens to move away from carbon-intensive products and value chains and adopt less carbon-intensive products aligned with climate and sustainability goals and help to meet SDG11.

The Challenge is based on a demand-driven and solution-oriented approach to technological innovation and there are two main approaches you can follow:

How can we enable the transformation of business models and consumption behaviour of the public and private sector as well as citizens towards sustainability and carbon-neutrality at the city level through digital solutions?
Think broad and across sectors like energy, mobility, construction, buildings etc.

How can we enable the greening of the digital sector through digital innovations?
Think of the development and implementation of innovative solutions that significantly reduce the GHG emissions of ICT infrastructure, data centres and ICT applications with a focus on digital smart cities applications?

More inspiring input can be found in the tab “Important details” as well as “Submission”.

Innovate2030 – SDG11

This Challenge is part of the Innovate2030-SDG11 Innovation Program. The program is jointly initialized by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and its new lab for digital innovations – digilab – in collaboration with the Make-IT Alliance.
