With 19 hospital locations, one of Germany’s largest university medical centers, and a growing ecosystem of over 1,900 healthcare companies, Essen is positioned as a key player in the future of health innovation. 

Another distinguishing feature of Essen is its close integration of medical practice and research. The University Hospital Essen is internationally renowned for its clinical studies and technological leadership. In addition, the University Alliance Ruhr (TU Dortmund, University of Duisburg-Essen, and Ruhr University Bochum) strengthens Essen’s role as a center for academic and translational research. 

EWG – Essener Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft mbH, in collaboration with ekipa, is launching this Open Innovation Challenge to identify groundbreaking scale-ups that can redefine healthcare through innovation. This challenge invites cutting-edge solutions that leverage AI, automation, and digital health to enhance patient care, streamline hospital operations, and push the boundaries of medical research. 

Scale-ups with market-ready solutions or advanced prototypes are encouraged to apply and explore Essen as their launchpad for expansion into the German and European markets.
