What is DEUTSCHLAND 4.0?

DEUTSCHLAND 4.0 is a nationwide innovation competition in cooperation with state minister Dorothee Bär and numerous representatives from business, politics and science, which calls on students, researchers, young professionals and founders to develop new ideas and solutions for the digital future of Germany. Using use cases from our cooperation partners, the aim is to solve real problems and challenges from a wide range of areas and to develop new innovations for added value in society. The participants receive support from experienced innovation coaches from the Lufthansa Group.

What is the goal of the project?

The aim of the project is to create an exchange between the digital generation, science, business and politics that will enable participants to help shape Germany's path to sustainable digitization. The aim is to develop new solutions and innovations that add value to digitization in society. The results will be published at the end of the challenge.

How do I participate?

You register on the platform, participate alone, form a team, or join one. Then you decide on one of the use cases and fill out and submit the submission template we have prepared for you - that's it. Under the tab "How-to" you will find all the detailed information.

How mature must the approach be?

For the submission it is sufficient to enter your idea or solution approach in the guiding questions of our submission template and upload it on our platform. It doesn't have to be a fully developed concept with concrete implementation, a visualization of your idea (maybe even sketch based) is sufficient – it should as well developed as possible but appropriate to the time you have

What happens with the rights to my solution?

Every participant will always be able to use his or her own submissions to the full extent. With regard to the planned joint publication of all solutions, the final teams will only grant us the necessary rights so that we can publish the solution under a Creative Common License (non-commercial). In addition, all final teams agree to enter into discussions with the respective use case submitter within three months of the project's completion regarding possible further collaboration or further use of the submissions. During this period, the final teams also agree not to enter into discussions with third parties regarding further use of the solutions. All details can be found in the Conditions of Participation

What happens after the first deadline?

After the end of the deadline, the submissions of the various use cases will be reviewed by the organizers and the respective use case sponsors. The two best teams per use case will be selected and invited to participate in the Bootcamp. All participants will be informed about their participation until January 25th, 2021. After completion of the project, the concepts will be published in a joint publication, the teams will receive individual support and a cooperation with the use case providers will be defined.

What incentives and prizes are available and why should I apply?

In every phase of the challenge you will be supported exclusively by experienced innovation coaches from the Lufthansa Group. In addition to the publication of your solution approach, the winners will also receive a prize pool of 15.000 EUR in total. The solutions of all final teams will also be published in a joint, large publication, which we will publish together with all involved representatives after the challenge. The winning teams of the challenge will be invited to a personal interview with state minster Dorothee Bär at the Federal Chancellery. By participating in this project, you will also have the opportunity to get in touch with experts from business and science and participate in exclusive events with personal mentoring. In addition, the award-winning teams will be getting the chance to gain feedback and support by the Campus Founders Program. The project also offers a platform for potential internships and continuation opportunities in cooperation with the companies of the respective use cases.

How does the digital bootcamp work?

The Bootcamp will be completely handled by digital tools, we will connect you with experts from business and science and the company representatives of your use cases to give you new input for a further elaboration of your approaches. You will discuss your approaches in networking sessions, various workshops on specific topics and coaching sessions with innovation coaches of the Lufthansa Group.

How does the digital final event work?

The final event will be completely digital and will offer you a stage to pitch your idea in front of a jury headed by Minister of State Dorothee Bär. Various stages are available for this purpose, on which the final teams compete against each other in front of selected jurors. In addition to the pitches, there will be keynote speeches by innovation experts and a panel discussion and also a joint "Get Together". At the end of the event the winners of the challenge will be selected and honored.

How does Corona affect the project?

However, it is a fact that the project can be carried out completely digitally and the events are planned as digital events for the time being. In case of a physical implementation we will follow the recommendations of the federal and state governments as well as the RKI. When working with your teammates, we would like to ask you to observe current regulations of infection control and to avoid physical meetings if possible. You can find all information about this here (https://www.bundesgesundheitsministerium.de/coronavirus.html).
