Digital & Sustainable Solutions for Future Logistics and Transportation of Goods

Let's start and innovate together with Bosch to create a more efficient, more sustainable, more intelligent, more exciting and safer logistic industry.

The Mobility of Goods causes many emissions and many of them are due to inefficiencies along the supply chain. Closing the digitalization-gap and building novel solutions for the logistics industry can help. Preventing empty journeys, enabling intermodal and intelligent logistics, exploiting data-based opportunities, or keeping people enthusiastic and as safe as goods - there is a lot to do.

Mobility of Goods

The Mobility of Goods causes many emissions, many of them due to inefficiencies along the supply chain - and thus holds great potential for reducing global CO2 emissions!

One main reason is that the market of logistics service providers, so-called LSPs, is highly fragmented. This brings inefficiencies, for example in the required handover of goods and their documents.

Handovers must be very thorough, as goods may have been stolen, lost or damaged by the previous logistics service provider. With the handover, liability for the undamaged product also is transferred - with high risks or insurance costs. In addition, the unloading and reloading process must be as efficient as possible to avoid half-empty holds.

Another reason is the usually relatively low level of digitization of LSPs, making it difficult to establish transparency about inefficiencies such as the determination of free cargo space capacities or pricing across the entire transportation process. Many trucks drive (half-)empty, at least in one direction.

The large number of players - leading to intense competition - and the inefficiencies due to analog and non-transparent processes result in very low margins (without taking into account the high and rising cost of diesel). As a result, employees in the logistics industry suffer from unattractive working conditions.

Challenge

Bosch encourages you to develop new or apply existing innovative solutions to jointly address inefficiencies and create a more sustainable, intelligent, safe and attractive Mobility of Goods industry.

Let’s enable LSPs on road and rail incl. intermodal hubs/X-Docks and off-road logistics for any goods on first, middle and last mile to…

  • Avoid empty, semi-/over-loaded drives and packaging waste
  • Facilitate intermodal logistics: shift to rail, e-vans…
  • Improve logistics by better visibility of people and vehicles based on enhanced data quality and by (A)IoT solutions for data driven sustainable mobility of goods
  • Safe drive: no harm by/to vehicles or goods
  • Secure transport: No theft and fending of cyber attacks
  • Exciting logistics services: what comes after “same day delivery”
  • Exciting workplace for logistics people

The opportunities are a broad playing field - both solutions for clear use cases and more holistic solutions are in scope.

To help you develop your use case, Bosch has also identified the four opportunity areas “Enhance End-to-End Visibility”, “Make the Load Fit”, “Assist Logistic Workers to Perform best” and “Optimize Energy Consumption, Support Shifting into New Modes”.

You can find all details and guiding questions in the tab "Important Details".

Who can participate?

The Challenge is calling students, researchers, professionals, startups, KMUs and corporates to accelerate and enable the transition towards a more efficient, more sustainable, more exciting and safer logistic industry.
