Quantum Computing for Materials Research

Join Deloitte’s Quantum Climate Challenge 2023!
Deloitte’s Quantum Climate Challenge 2023 aims to investigate how quantum computers may help to improve materials used in direct air capture of carbon dioxide.

In particular, you, as a participant will evaluate how metal organic frameworks can be leveraged in direct air capture by calculating the potential energy surface of atmospheric gas molecules in the vicinity of the metal organic frameworks' preferential binding sites.

Further, you will develop a general concept to calculate the ideal carbon dioxide binding capacity per filter volume of metal organic frameworks on near term quantum computers. Based on the findings you will estimate what is needed for quantum hardware to solve this problem at scale and when this hardware might be available.

Detailed challenge description

You can download the detailed challenge description here.

Deloitte’s Quantum Climate Challenge 2023 is your chance to dive deep into chemistry simulations using quantum computers. Join now and investigate how quantum computers may make an impact that matters on removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere!

The challenge is designed to be more than just a toy problem – challenging, but solvable. We highly encourage tackling the challenge as a team. A background in quantum computing, computer science, physics and/or (computational) chemistry may as well be helpful, but is not required.

Resources

After you register for the challenge, the following resources are available to you via a then added Tab "Confidential Information":

  • Access to an IBM Quantum Computer
  • Access to the classical quantum chemistry cloud service (provided by Quantistry) to generate reference solutions.
  • AWS credits to be used for Amazon Braket (to be used for simulator and hardware access)
